Arts Council England x Freelance : Futures
FREELANCE : FUTURES was a call for collective learning and action to build equitable conditions for freelancers working in culture.
Through free resources, workshops, panel discussions, self-organising spaces and virtual gathering (13 – 17 June), we explored sector organising, freelancer rights and resources, organisational transformation and policy-making, over nine weeks from May to July 2022.
Freelance : Futures was commissioned by Arts Council England and created by a consortium of partners, including people make it work
(Varyah provided support through Associate Consultancy).
Services provided:
- Lead producer including project, event and budgetary management
- Marketing and communications, including copy-writing
and graphic design for social media and x 2 platforms
- Website development x 2 platforms (legacy platform
and Mighty Network community build)
- Music production - development of bespoke theme, Please Hold
City of Culture Leadership Programme x 1521 Individuals to Cohort
In June 2020, Coventry City of Culture Trust selected 15 up-and-coming leaders from nearly 100 applications for the City of Culture Leadership Programme that ran across two years.
In July 2022, the 15 ‘graduated’ with an event at Assembly Festival Gardens in Coventry, featuring reflections and provocations including spoken word, poetry, music, visual arts and dance, exploring the themes; The Change In Me & The Change I Want To See
Services provided:
- Lead producer including programme, project, event, artist, supplier and budgetary management
- Graphic design for social media content and printed materials including 1521 Contact Book, Doodle Wall, Playing Cards & Programmes
- Copy-writing for all printed materials and digital content including e-invitations and enquiries

Fierce Festival x Healing Gardens of Bab @ Selfridges Birmingham
Healing Gardens of Bab is an artistic response to our colonial history that celebrates what Empire tried (and failed) to stamp out.
Working with a group of five young LGBTQIA+ creatives, Fierce devised
a programme of performances, events and artworks that uplifted expressions of queerness globally, through joyous spectacles and participatory events across Birmingham. The programme featured queer artists and collectives from across the Commonwealth. Local artist Mazahir Hussain aka Girth of Venus was commissioned to create the Healing Gardens of Bab lead artwork.
Services provided:
- Live event production including photography/video for social media content and evaluation
- Client (Selfridges), artiste relationship management and public engagement
- Contracts, risk assessments and artist packs, including related administration
Bernie Grant Arts Centre x Windrush Festival 2022
Bernie Grant Arts Centre is a unique multi-art form venue in Tottenham, North London - a home for diverse artists, audiences
and creative businesses.
Bernie Grant Arts Centre commemorated Windrush Day 2022 with a week-long celebration including music, performance, spoken word
and visual arts, culminating with a packed one-day Windrush Festival.
Services provided:
- Campaign planning, supplier management and budgetary counsel
- Graphic design for social media content, printed materials including A3 posters, 4-sheets, invitations and flyers
- Video creation for multi-channel social media content / advertising
- Copy-writing including for e-newsletters, Eventbrite listings,
printed materials, radio scripts and social media

Upswing Aerial x Common Ground
Common Ground is Upswing’s new circus theatre project, focusing on the complexity of identity, the difficulty we have talking about race and why it can be so hard to find common ground.
Common Ground brings together a dynamic creative team led by Upswing’s Artistic Director, Vicki Dela Amedume, rising comedy star Athena Kugblenu, London-based music maker Afrikan Boy, and filmmaker Dan Martin – creating an ambitious and daring mash-up of contemporary circus, spoken word, UK Hip Hop, Grime and Afrobeat.

- Audience engagement and community outreach
- Copywriting, including marcomms and ‘personal journal’
- Graphic design including printed materials and social media content
- Evaluation reporting - 24-page review plus x 2 video reviews
Varyah x Creative Communicative Consultancy
Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) are at the heart of Varyah’s bespoke approach to consultative partnerships with clients.
The team are highly skilled at combining lived experience and facilitative tools to create safe spaces in which to discuss challenging themes.
